The MiraCosta Promise is an extraordinary institutional financial aid program that provides students with tuition-free education for their first year of college, covers mandatory fees, and provides textbook support. The program combines financial assistance with holistic support systems that ensure students thrive during their educational journey.
The ultimate goal of the MiraCosta Promise is to privately fund a college education for every eligible student seeking an associate degree, certificate, or transfer to a four-year college or university.
Students are struggling to pay for college as never before.
Nearly half of MiraCosta College students subsist on an annual individual income of less than $18,000. Approximately 75 percent of our students are employed while they are taking classes. Forty-six percent of our students rely on institutional aid, such as the Board of Governors Fee Waiver, to finance their education, and often this is still not enough.
Forty-four percent of low-income students attend community colleges as their first step to a more advanced degree, as opposed to just 15 percent of high-income students. Almost 40 percent of community college students are the first in their families to seek a post-secondary education.
Studies indicate an associate degree yields more than $450,000 in increased earnings over a working lifetime. Over the next decade, more than 70 percent of the fastest-growing occupations will require a post-secondary education. Both of these are among the many reasons over 80 Promise programs have spread rapidly across the country.
